One of the top billings at the 2007 Montreal Jazz Festival featured guitar whiz Mike Stern “sitting in” with jazz-fusion heavyweights the Yellowjackets. The resulting record (Lifecycle, Heads Up International, 2008) earned a Grammy nomination for “Best Contemporary Jazz Album” and garnered plenty of critical acclaim besides. The reason is simple, this is no mere guest appearance, on the contrary, it’s a summit meeting of (quoting keyboardist Russell Ferrante) “five musicians with a genuine rapport.” Email a friend
