When the Chicago Jazz Festival asked him to reiterate the music of John Coltrane and Johnny Hartman, eight-time Grammy nominee Kurt Elling was happy to oblige (on the condition that he be granted artistic license to “do it his own way”). The vocalist set to work enlisting a string quartet to accommodate his vision. He has since incorporated saxophonist / flutist Ernie Watts atop a trio lead by his long-time accomplice, pianist / arranger Laurence Hobgood.
