More Information
Anat Cohen is a fresh shot of energy for the often neglected clarinet. Popular during the swing era, the clarinet was the preferred instrument of jazz legends Benny Goodman, Artie Shaw, and Woody Herman. During the bebop era, the 'licorice stick' was superseded by the brassy saxophone as the reed instrument of choice. Yet, more recently, the influences of Brazilian choros and Old World klezmer have re-introduced the clarinet to the jazz world, and Anat is leading the charge. She has won the clarinet category in both the Jazz Journalists and DownBeat jazz polls, and her onstage exuberance is absolutely contagious. If you haven't heard Anat Cohen in concert – you should. Claroscuro is her latest CD.
