Joe Lovano is among the most prolific of today¹s saxophonists. His musical
curiosity has no bounds. Regardless of artist style or genre, from the funk
grooves of Dr. Lonnie Smith to the avant-garde explorations of Paul Motian
and Bill Frisell, Lovano¹s intuitive musicianship allows him to fit with any
situation and he always delivers ³the goods.² His current group, Us Five, is
unusual in that it utilizes two drummers. The duo drumming team of Otis
Brown III and Francisco Mela create a polyrhythmic stew, allowing bassist
Esperanza Spalding, pianist James Weidman and Lovano, to solo freely over a percussive framework. The quintet¹s third release, Crossroads, will be
released on January 8, 2013 on the Blue Note Label. This is Lovano¹s 23rd
release for Blue Note. |
